Trudy Hales

Upper Akitio Catchment Leader

Trudy Hales has a diverse professional background spanning radio, marketing, tourism, and theatre production—most notably touring the New Zealand show Apollo 13: Mission Control across New Zealand and the United States. She's held senior roles in sport, including General Manager of the Wellington Saints and League Manager for the NZ National Basketball League.

Since 2012, Trudy and her husband Simon have embraced rural life on their Tararua sheep and beef farm, where they’ve earned accolades for their sustainable practices, including the 2020 Tararua Sheep and Beef Farm Business of the Year. Their on-farm venture, Kereru Goods, reflects Trudy’s entrepreneurial flair—offering sheepskins and hides sourced directly from the land, along with a cottage that provides boutique rural accommodation.

After taking time out to raise their two children, Trudy joined the Tararua District Council, initially as part of the Cyclone Recovery Team and more recently in the Communications team. She now works from home, focusing on communications, marketing, and event work—both locally and nationally,

Trudy remains involved in her community—co-chairing the Tararua Excellence in Farming Awards and actively supporting community initiatives.
