Water Testing

Understanding the health of our rivers is crucial to improving them. Through regular water testing at key locations, we monitor the quality of our waterways to identify issues and guide our efforts in better managing our freshwater ecosystems.

Our Catchment Map

The Puketoi to the Pacific Catchment Collective (PPCC) will be conducting monthly water testing at eight sites along our rivers to monitor freshwater health. This testing will complement the work already being done by Horizons, with samples sent to Central Environmental Laboratories (CEL) in Palmerston North for analysis of eight key markers.

Results will be reviewed by Tania Bramley, an Environmental Scientist and freshwater expert from NZ Landcare Trust. As data is gathered, we’ll display the results on our website in easy-to-read graphs, allowing you to track and compare the health of each river.

Why do we water test?

We are conducting water testing, so see what pollutants exist in our freshwater ways. By identifying these, we can work collectively to minimise pollutant discharge and look to eliminate critical flow pathways where possible. We want to improve our freshwater quality and bring biodiversity back into our rivers and streams. There are lots of ways and ideas to do this, and we can work with you to sustainably manage your farming business around this.
